I’m not sure why but I’ve held a kind of anti Rooney bias for a while. I think I read one of her books a while ago, enjoyed it, but kind of found all the characters in it annoying. I found this one enjoyable to read - a page turner.

Typically I don’t pick up modern books that are written for a general audience, and trying to basically be entertaining and enjoyable. My default is to find some pseudo modernist thing which tries to reflect the experience alienation by having telling a story exclusively tvia advertisting slogans, or whatever. If I want to enjoy reading I generally go for P.G. Wodehouse. So yeah, it was nice to read something that was meant for you to have a good time.

Criticisms:

• I think Sally Rooney needs to accept that she is essentially a pornographer, and make her sex scenes even more explicit.
• I found this book a lot more annoying when I found out that Sally Rooney was “the top debater at the European Universities Debating Championships”.
• I didn’t like the ending. Everything just turns out okay and all wrongs are forgiven? Ok.
